If you’re training out of your own home, you’re going to need to make the most of your space.
One of the key considerations is the footprint of your gym equipment: the sheer amount of space it takes up on your floor-plan. After all, square feet of space are always in demand and too big of a footprint might limit what training you can do at home. If you’re filling your home gym space up, you’re going to limit what other equipment you can keep and use. Being economical means making the most of your space, cash, and getting the best workout possible.
Today we’re discussing how a pull up stand’s “footprint” works, why it’s important, and how to maximise your space.
WHAT’S THE “FOOTPRINT” AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?
The footprint of your equipment is the amount of floor-space it takes up – it’s the size of the base. This is crucial for planning your training at home but is also one of the important ways of producing stability. You wouldn’t want a squat rack or pull up tower that you can’t rely on when you’re training, but you need to make the most of your space.
Part of the point of a good piece of home gym equipment is reliability and safety: you don’t want anything to tip when it’s holding you or weight!
The base of support is one of the key factors in the size of a footprint, so you don’t want it to be too small, but adding a wider base or more weight is only going to make for a more difficult to use or move.
THE SIZE
The problem is that the size of houses in Britain means we’re dealing with a relatively limited square-footage, so floor space is worth considering. You’re not going to be able to fit a full commercial gym into your home, so it’s key to pick and choose carefully.
When we look at the most important aspects of training effectively, it’s clear: calisthenics and gymnastic strength training is one of the most important and easily-trained skills. It’s a way of improving strength, muscle mass, joint health, and performance with relatively little equipment.
Bodyweight strength training does need a footprint, however: you ned to make sure you’re not falling over when you perform pull-ups and other dynamic movements. It’s a fine balance between support and manageable size.

The last thing you want is instability when you should be worrying about your technique and performance.
Since both these products have dedicated carry-bags and can be taken down and put up easily, they offer a zero-footprint design to maximise your space and keep your home gym tidy.
The balance between size, footprint, and stability is a fine one. Too big and you’re going to push out other things from your gym, but if you go too small then you run the risk of toppling over at the worst time! The way we deal with stability with pull up mate – and the second iteration – is different, but they are both built on the ability to be totally collapsed and providing maximal stability for your goals.
HOW DOES PULL UP MATE SAVE SPACE AND IMPROVE STABILITY?
When we designed the Pull Up Mate product line, space and stability were two of the key design ideas (obviously, the other main factor was the quality and versatility of the workouts!).
The footprint of the original Pull Up Mate is very small for the stability it provides. It’s a reliable, sturdy product that is designed for movements like pull ups, core work, and dips. We use other methods of producing stability like effective balancing and rubber foot-grips.
However, can you perform muscle ups on a Pull Up Mate?
Movements like the muscle up introduce so much dynamic movement that you need more stability, and your pull up bar setup needs to reflect this.
That’s why we took an increased footprint and stability-demand for the pull up mate 2. We designed the 2 to allow for muscle ups and other seriously-challenging, advanced bodyweight training.
The footprint and weighting/balance of this product are more significant. They need to be to support the dynamic movements! However, both the original pull up mate and the pull up mate 2 are entirely collapsible while also being extremely stable. When it comes to pull ups, there’s no better training tool than consistent, frequent training. You can make this possible by getting your own complete, in-home calisthenics workout solution. The Pull Up Mate – and Pull Up Mate 2 – are comprehensive pull up bars for any home that offer a wide variety of bodyweight training options. Still not convinced?
